Coral Beach
For a truly unique coastal experience, make time to visit Coral Beach (also known as the Coral Strand) just outside Ballyconneely village about a 15-minute drive along the scenic R341 from Clifden. Unlike most sandy Irish beaches, this striking shoreline shimmers white and pink underfoot, made not of sand but of small fragments of maërl, a rare, coral-like red seaweed that has naturally calcified over thousands of years. The result is a “beach” that crunches gently beneath your feet and glows against the turquoise waters of Mannin Bay.
Coral Beach is one of just a handful of maërl beaches in Europe, making it a rare geological and ecological treasure. The beach owes its unusual texture and color to coralline algae that grows slowly on the seabed before breaking off and washing ashore. Over centuries, this process has created a shoreline of gleaming coral fragments that change color with the light, from creamy white in the sun to blush pink at dusk.
The clear waters of Mannin Bay provide a calm and inviting setting for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. The beach shelves gently into the water, making it suitable for a relaxed dip, though the “coral” can be rough underfoot, water shoes are definitely a smart idea. The sea here is exceptionally clear, with sunlight dancing off the shallow seabed, revealing a stunning underwater world for those who explore with mask and snorkel.
Coral Beach may not have cafés or changing facilities, but that’s part of its charm, it remains peaceful, natural, and unspoiled.
From Clifden, take the R341 south toward Ballyconneely. About 10 kilometers along, you’ll spot Coral Beach on your right, the first strand you’ll come to with two small parking areas. The second car park offers easier beach access through a gap in the stone wall (ideal for those with buggies or gear).
Come prepared with sturdy footwear and perhaps a picnic, as the beach has minimal facilities. Sandwiches and coffee can be got at Keoghs Delicatessen or Sweet Nothings Cafe, in Ballyconneely. What it lacks in amenities, though, it more than makes up for in natural beauty. Whether you’re strolling along the coral shore, dipping into the cool Atlantic, or simply admiring the glittering contrast of pink coral against blue-green sea, Coral Beach rewards every visitor with a sense of discovery.
Just minutes from Clifden yet worlds apart, Coral Beach in Ballyconneely is one of Connemara’s quiet masterpieces, a perfect blend of beauty, rarity, and calm that captures the spirit of Ireland’s wild west coast.
