Lettergesh Beach

Lettergesh Beach

If you’re looking for a quiet, unspoiled beach with postcard-worthy views, make your way to Lettergesh Beach on the north side of the Renvyle Peninsula. Roughly a 30-minute drive (about 25 km) from Clifden town, this secluded spot offers golden sands, glass clear Atlantic waters, and sweeping views of Mweelrea Mountain in Mayo, Connacht’s highest peak—rising majestically across the bay. Behind you lie the rugged ridges of Benchoona and Garraun, adding drama to the already spectacular setting.

From Clifden, take the N59 north toward Letterfrack, then turn left onto the Renvyle road following signs for Tully Cross. Continue along this coastal route for about 10 km until you see a signposted turn for Lettergesh. Follow the narrow lane down to the coast. Drive carefully, as the road can be single-track in places—and you’ll find the beach opens up suddenly before you, revealing one of the Renvyle Peninsula’s loveliest views.

Lettergesh feels wild and untouched because it largely is. The beach has a gravel car park right beside the sand, making access easy even for families with beach gear or picnickers. However, there are no on-site facilities, no toilets, bins, café, or lifeguard service, so it’s wise to plan ahead. Bring water, snacks, and rubbish bags, and be sure to bring everything home with you.

If you need restrooms, you may be able to use the facilities at Connemara Caravan and Camping Park nearby, but permission should always be sought first. Swimming here can be wonderful on calm days thanks to the gently sloping shore and clear shallows, but conditions can change quickly, so check locally for safety advice before entering the water.

Lettergesh is the kind of beach that invites you to slow down. Even in summer, it’s often peaceful enough to hear only the gulls, the waves, and the distant bleating of sheep. At low tide, the beach stretches to its full, golden width, perfect for walks or exploring rock pools that appear along the edges. If you wander across the small promontory at the beach’s northern end, you’ll find another equally pretty strand, Culfin Beach, separated by the Culfin River.

Movie lovers might also recognize the setting: Lettergesh was featured in “The Quiet Man” (1952), in the memorable horse racing scene filmed along its sands. It’s a fun piece of Hollywood history tucked into Connemara’s wild landscape.

After your beach walk, you can easily pair Lettergesh with other local highlights. Visit Kylemore Abbey and its Victorian walled gardens (just 20 minutes away) or stop in Letterfrack for coffee or lunch. The scenic Renvyle Loop Drive leads through traditional seaside villages like Tullycross and Renvyle, offering plenty of stops for photos, sea views, or a pint in a cozy pub.

For a truly Connemara experience—tranquil, rugged, and deeply beautiful, Lettergesh Beach is an ideal short trip from Clifden. Bring a picnic, good walking shoes, and an unhurried mindset, and you’ll discover why this hidden bay remains one of the region’s best-kept secrets.
