Glassilaun Beach
If you want to experience one of Connemara’s most breathtaking beaches, set your sights on Glassilaun Beach, near Renvyle in County Galway. This white-sand stretch, backed by rugged mountains and kissed by the clear Atlantic, is an easy half-day trip that captures the essence of Ireland’s wild beauty.
From Clifden, take the N59 north toward Leenane (a drive of about 45 minutes) and follow the Connemara Loop as it winds past Lough Fee. Look out for signposts to Glassilaun Beach and Scuba Dive West, which will guide you down the final narrow roads to the shoreline. The drive itself is spectacular, weaving through valleys and along the Killary fjard (a fjord-like glacial inlet), a paradise for photographers and sightseers alike.
When you arrive, you’ll find a long, gently curving beach, over 600 metres of soft white sand and turquoise water that rivals any Mediterranean bay. Behind you rise the Maumturk Mountains and Mweelrea, Connemara’s tallest peak, creating a dramatic backdrop that shifts with the light and weather.
Though there are no formal facilities (no café or toilets), there’s ample car parking close to the beach, and on sunny days you’ll often share the space with families, swimmers, and snorkelers. Glassilaun is part of Ireland’s Blueway initiative, meaning it features information boards that highlight safe swimming and paddling routes as well as marine life to watch for.
The crystal-clear waters here are ideal for swimming, snorkelling, or kayaking, especially at high tide when the sea glows with startling shades of blue and green. Scuba Dive West, located nearby, runs guided dives and beginner lessons for those who want to explore beneath the surface, the marine life along this coast is rich and diverse. For those who prefer to stay dry, a scenic walk along the beach or the surrounding headlands is just as rewarding, offering sweeping views across Renvyle Bay and the mouth of Killary Harbour.
Don’t rush away just yet, the area around Glassilaun is bursting with charm and history. A short drive west brings you to Tullycross, a welcoming village with traditional pubs and cafés where you can warm up after a dip in the Atlantic. To the east, Killary Harbour stretches inland for 16 kilometres, one of only three fjards (a shorter, shallower cousin of a fjord) in Ireland. The harbour makes for a memorable detour, consider a stop at Leenane, a postcard-perfect village at its head, known for seafood chowder and mountain views.
Bring a picnic, a towel, and sturdy shoes, and be prepared for weather that changes as quickly as the tides. Even on a misty day, Glassilaun Beach retains a mystical allure that perfectly captures the spirit of Connemara: wild, peaceful, and endlessly photogenic.
