East End Beach

East End Beach

If you’re staying in Clifden and looking for a day trip that captures the magic of Connemara’s coastline, East End Bay on Inishbofin is a gem worth discovering. Just a short hop across the water from the fishing village of Cleggan, this sheltered sandy beach blends tranquillity, local warmth, and wild Atlantic scenery.

From Clifden, it’s an easy 15–20 minute drive north to Cleggan Pier, where passenger ferries depart daily for Inishbofin. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and offers sweeping views of the Connemara coastline and the Twelve Bens mountains. Once on the island, head east from the harbour along the main road out of the village. You can walk, cycle, or hire an e-bike from a local outfit near the pier. The road hugs the coastline for a scenic 40-minute walk (or a quick 15-minute cycle), passing by fields, stone walls, and the charming East End Village before opening to the broad arc of East End Bay Beach.

East End Bay is one of Inishbofin’s most accessible and family-friendly beaches. Its gently sloping sands make it ideal for paddling, swimming, or simply lounging with a picnic. The water here is crystal clear, often showing aquamarine hues on calm days. The beach’s curve gives it a sheltered feel, while still offering magnificent views towards the Atlantic.

Locals and visitors alike come here to swim, fish, and occasionally windsurf, though conditions can vary depending on tides and weather. Always check local advice before swimming, ask at your accommodation or at the Community Centre in the island village to confirm the safest spots. Some sections can experience stronger currents, so a little caution goes a long way.

At the far end of the bay, adventurous visitors can scramble across a few rocks to find a smaller cove, a secluded sandy hideaway that feels worlds apart. It’s ideal for some quiet reading or simply basking in the peace of the island.

On the island, walking and cycling are the best ways to explore. You’ll find a few spots near East End Village where you can lock a bike or rest for a picnic. Public toilets and refreshments are available back in the main harbour area, and some small cafés on the island offer light lunches and coffee.

Further afield, Duach Beach (also known as Dumhach) lies a short distance west and is another gorgeous spot for swimming or walking.

Inishbofin’s East End Bay offers everything that makes Connemara special, clear Atlantic air, friendly locals, unspoiled beaches, and the kind of peace you can’t find on the mainland. Whether you come for a day trip from Clifden or spend a few nights on the island, this beach is the perfect place to unwind, dig your toes into the sand, and soak up the rhythm of island life.
