Bunowen Beach

Bunowen Beach

If you’re looking for a quiet, scenic spot to swim, relax, and enjoy some freshly smoked fish, Bunowen Beach near Ballyconneely is a perfect little getaway. Only about 15 minutes’ drive southwest of Clifden, this hidden gem offers peace, beauty, and a real taste of the west coast.

From Clifden, take the R341 towards Ballyconneely. As you reach the village, watch for the right-hand fork signposted for the Connemara Golf Club and the Smokehouse. Follow that winding road straight to the sea, you’ll soon find yourself pulling up near Bunowen Pier and the sheltered bay. Parking is limited near the beach itself, but you can often find a few spaces by the harbour at the end of the road.

Bunowen Beach curves gracefully around a small bay, its soft golden sand giving way to clear, fresh Atlantic water. Like most of Connemara’s coastline, the sea here is beautifully transparent, shimmering with shades of turquoise and deep blue on a sunny day. The seabed stays sandy underfoot, making it ideal for wading or swimming, though it does get deep quite quickly, so take care if venturing out far.

The nearby pier adds a picturesque charm while also providing a measure of shelter, making this a calm and inviting place for a dip, especially on a bright, still morning. You might even see a few small boats moored in the inlet, their reflections dancing on the gentle waves.

Once you’ve had your fill of saltwater and sea air, stroll up towards the nearby Bunowen Smokehouse, just beside the harbour. Here, local artisans smoke their fish using traditional techniques, creating rich, flavourful salmon and other delicacies. Picking up a fillet or two for lunch, or to take back for dinner. It’s all part of the full Bunowen experience.

Bunowen Bay lies about five miles east of Slyne Head and ten miles west of Roundstone, nestled among rocky outcrops and shoals typical of this rugged coastline. Despite these natural formations, it provides good protection from winds coming from the west through north to east. The small harbour offers mooring for a few boats, with dinghy access available via the slip beside the pier.

Bunowen Beach is compact but breathtaking, one of those spots where time seems to slow down. The sand is powdery, the sea clear and invigorating, and the setting remarkably unspoiled. Many visitors confuse it with nearby Aillebrack Beach, which speaks to its shared beauty and quiet appeal.

A morning or afternoon at Bunowen is an easy and rewarding escape, perfect for anyone seeking authentic Connemara scenery with just the right mix of adventure and relaxation.
