If you’re spending time in Clifden and want to discover one of Connemara’s quieter treasures, make your way to Aillebrack Beach, also known as Silverhill Beach on the Ballyconneely Peninsula. Just a 20-minute drive (about 12 km) southwest of Clifden, this secluded spot offers the perfect balance of natural beauty, peace, and authenticity that many visitors seek in the west of Ireland.
Nestled about 5 km west of Ballyconneely village along the local L1106 road, Aillebrack Beach is a pristine stretch of white sand and smooth rock headlands that open southward toward the Atlantic. At roughly 340 metres long, the main strand is surrounded by rugged coastal scenery that shifts with the light. The nearby Connemara Championship Golf Links lies just to the north, while a small caravan and camping park can be found to the west, giving visitors several options for accommodation or refreshments nearby.
This beach consistently earns the Green Coast Award, a distinction given to Irish beaches with outstanding water quality and a strong sense of community stewardship. Despite its modest size, Aillebrack Beach feels wonderfully expansive. When the tide is out, the white sands stretch out before you, framed by turquoise shallows and the soft silhouettes of the Twelve Bens mountains in the distance. It’s ideal for a slow walk, an afternoon of beachcombing, or simply sitting back to watch the Atlantic roll in. On calm days, the water is clear and inviting—a safe, shallow place for a dip if you’re comfortable swimming. Just note that there are no lifeguards on duty, so only swim when conditions are suitable and be mindful of tides.
Facilities are minimal here, which is part of the charm. Bring snacks, water, and anything you might need for a relaxing afternoon. Public toilets aren’t available; however, visitors may request permission to use the restroom facilities at the nearby Connemara Golf Links Clubhouse. It’s best to plan accordingly before your visit.
In short, Aillebrack (Silverhill) Beach is a perfect destination if you want to experience Connemara’s raw coastline at its best. It’s unspoilt, peaceful, and deeply tied to the local community a rare combination that makes this beach feel truly special.
