Open Water Sea Swimming In Magical Killary Fjord

Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Killary Fjord, Co Galway, with Connemara's majestic mountains soaring all around. Open water swimming events don't get much better than this.

The Great Fjord Swim is an open-water swimming event which takes place in the deep green waters of Killary Fjord surrounded by the mountains of Mayo and Connemara.

This sea swimming event has a choice of 3 distances 3.9km (full Ironman distance) | 2km | 750m for all levels of experience in open sea swimming.

• FITNESS: You MUST be able to swim 2km confidently before taking part in the 2km event and 3.9km confidently before taking part in the 3.9km event. If you cannot do this then the 750m event may be more suited for you as a great introduction to open water swimming racing.
• AGE: All competitors in all distances must be 16 years of age or over. Competitors under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian complete a consent form on their behalf, which must be brought to registration on the day of the event.
• TOW FLOATS: Tow floats MUST be worn by all competitors. No competitor will be allowed in the water without a tow float. You can order a tow float to rent or buy during event registration or bring your own.
• CUT-OFF TIMES: Anyone who does not meet their cut-off time will be picked up by the water safety team. If at any time our safety team does not feel that you are capable of meeting the cut-off time, or they are concerned for your safety, you will be removed from the water. These decisions are always made with your safety in mind. The Water Safety Director’s decision is final.
• GAELFORCE GREAT FJORD SWIM HAT: All competitors MUST wear the Gaelforce Great Fjord Swim hat provided in your race pack as it contains your timing chip. Please ensure you are wearing the correct hat colour, as these allow us to distinguish competitors in each distance.
• WETSUIT POLICY: Wetsuits are not mandatory – competitors across all distances can choose whether to wear a wetsuit, but you must state your preference when you register for this event. There are prizes for wetsuit and non-wetsuit winners in each distance. 

The Great Fjord Swim is a unique event with swimmers being brought out into the fjord by boat and jumping off to reach the start line! This is a superb opportunity to explore one of the west coast of Ireland’s Blueway locations from a unique perspective.
