The Joe Heaney Festival (May Bank Holiday) is a weekend of songs, lectures, music, concerts and sessions.
The weekend includes a concert as well as various lively music sessions. We should mention that the area boasts beautiful sandy beaches, lovely views and walks. Beidh fáilte romhat!
Joe Heaney, born in 1919 in Carna, grew up surrounded by traditional singing and storytelling. He began singing at a young age and won a national competition in his twenties. He spent most of his life abroad, working various jobs to support himself while establishing himself as a master of sean-nós singing, a unique Irish vocal tradition, through performances and recordings. Although he felt more appreciated abroad, Heaney continued to share his culture by teaching and performing until his death in 1984.
