Killary Fjord Shellfish Mussel Farm

Killary Fjord Shellfish Mussel Farm

Killary Fjord Shellfish is a family run shellfish business based on Killary fjord. Simon has been growing mussels here since 1989 and he is considered one of the pioneers
of mussel farming all those years ago.

At Killary Fjord Shellfish we farm blue-shell mussels also known as the common mussel on longlines submerged 8 meters under water. Killary is an ideal location for growing mussels thanks to the unique combination of fresh and sea water which gives the Killary mussel a distinctive sweet flavour.

Find out all you ever wanted to know about mussel farming from Simon who has been growing mussels on the Fjord for the past thirty years and his team. Put on a life jacket and step on board the workboat, see what it takes to be a mussel farmer.

Watch as the mussels are hauled on board and harvested, graded and cleaned. Learn the life cycle of the humble mussel and the many stages it goes through before it reaches your plate.

Experience the Fjord from a unique position on board the workboat, feel the salt on your face as you return to the shore and the briny air in your nostrils. Back on terra firma you now get to enjoy your own shucked oyster and steaming bowl of shellfish in the boathouse.

Farm tours by prior arrangement on Tuesday Wednesday and Friday only.

We are located in remote part of the Fjord accessed by coaches no larger than 35 seats. For larger coaches arrangements can be made to shuttle clients in from nearby parking area.
