Digital Archive Day

We are looking for old photographs and documents, which relate to the town and its immediate surroundings. These can be fairly new, from a good many years ago, or ancient. They can feature, people, events, or just scenery.
We are organising a day, in conjunction with Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer of Galway County Council, and Brendan Smith of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute of NUIG, on Sunday 21st February. This day will take place at the Station House Hotel and begins at 12 noon.
We will scan the photographs or documents, and give the originals back to the owners. It would be useful if you had a written description of the photograph, the people shown, the location, the year or whatever information you have. Even if you have no information we would be happy to see these photographs.
It is our intention, with the owners permission, to put these photographs up on the web, and ask people if they have further information, this might be the chance for you to find out who is in that old photograph you keep on the dresser, or that old scrap book.

Spring Connemara Pony Festival

The Connemara Pony Breeder’s Society will host its annual Spring Connemara Pony Festival Weekend in Clifden, Co. Galway from Thursday 25th March until Sunday 28th March 2010. The festival is now in its sixth year and has grown from strength to strength. It attracts pony enthusiasts from all over Ireland, Europe and as far a field as the United States. The festival offers visitors a chance to view a huge number of ponies and to partake in a range of pony related activities.
On Thursday evening 25th March Nina Gustafson will share with us her collection of photos of Connemara ponies in the Abbeyglen hotel. Nina and her husband have been travelling to Ireland from Sweden and photographing Connemara ponies since 1979.
On Friday 26th March colt inspections will take place in Clifden  On Friday night 26th March the ever popular table quiz will take place in the Station House Hotel.
A registered Connemara pony sale will be held in Clifden Mart on Saturday 27th March. Pat Lyne, well known author on Connemara ponies will give a lecture entitled ‘The Arabian influence in the Connemara pony’ on Saturday evening 27th March in the Station House Theatre, followed by an auction of a specially commissioned painting.
The annual stallion parade will run all day on Sunday 28th March.

Connemara International Marathon (Connemarathon)

The Connemara International Marathon is a day of racing around a very scenic part of the West of Ireland. Comprising of a Half Marathon, a Full Marathon and a 39.3 mile Ultra Marathon all taking place on the one day.

Aware Connemara Cycle 2010

The third annual Aware Connemara Charity Cycle will take place on Saturday April 24, commencing from Maam Cross at 11am. Cyclists of all abilities are invited to participate. There are 30 mile and 50 mile looped cycles from which to choose. This fun charity event will raise much needed funds for Aware in the west of Ireland. Connemara Mussel Festival on the Renvyle Peninsula

This is the fourth year of the festival and promises that more mussels will be eaten here this weekend than in any other part of the country. Last year over a ton of mussels were eaten and organisers are set to harvest three tonnes of Killary Mussels for this year's celebrations, which includes music, craic, mussel cooking competitions, children's treasure hunts and set dancing, to name a few.
All weekend long Tully Cross, Tully and Renvyle villages will host a plethora of local traditional and cover musicians. On Saturday evening visitors will have the opportunity to join and learn real Irish Set Dancing. Mussels will be served all day every day throughout the weekend.

Joe Heaney Commemorative Festival

Feile Chomortha Joe Einniu (Joe Heaney Commemorative Festival) is an annual weekend event held in Carna, Connemara, Co Galway, since 1985. This festival celebrates the life and achievements of the renowned sean nós singer, Joe Heaney, a native of Aird Thoir, Carna, who died in Seattle, USA, in 1984. Pride of place at the festival is given to traditional singing and the programme also includes instrumental music, sean nós dancing, workshops, sessions, a children's singing competition, talks and lectures, céilí and set dancing. Leenane Mountain Walking Festival Connemara

The third Mountain Walking Festival takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend in 2010. Enjoy a unique combination of mountain and sea, as Leenane is situated on the edge of Killary Harbour and surrouded by mountains in all directions. This is a festival with something for all levels of walkers. Transport to and from starting and finishing points will be provided. Connemara Adventure Challenge 2010

This year we are bringing you a brand new race – Connemara Adventure Challenge. It will take the format of Gaelforce West with 3 disciplines; trail/mountain running (walking and jogging also accepted!), Kayaking and cycling.The Connemara Adventure Challenge is almost half the distances of Gaelforce West at approx 26km in total and it is open to racers of all levels. It will take place amongst the most amazing scenery of Killary fjord and the spectacular Connemara. This area of the country is stunning, rugged and provides the perfect playground for an adventure race. The race will run on the 8th May and costs €65 per person.

Croi - Inishbofin Half Marathon

The 5th Annual Inishbofin Half Marathon will take place on Friday 14th May, 2010 on the Island of Inishbofin. Set on the idyllic island of Inishbofin, a small but stunningly beautiful and tranquil island off the west coast of Ireland - a guaranteed weekend of fun and challenge awaits participants in this annual Half Marathon. Croi Lough Corrib Cycling Challenge

On the 23rd May 2010, Croi, the West of Ireland Heart Charity will host their 18th annual Lough Corrib Cycle – The biggest annual charity cycle in the West of Ireland. This event, which has been growing steadily every year since 1993, includes 75-mile and 29-mile route options. Last year, over 500 cyclists completed the 75-mile route. The Event is organised by our very experienced team of event managers and supported by the local business community and emergency services. Facilities include refreshments at registration on the morning of the cycle, excellent refreshments on route, and volunteer support throughout the tour. All proceeds from this fundraising event will directly contribute to the fight against heart disease.

Connemara Bog Week

Ten-day multi-layered authentic festival - a celebration of landscape. Vibrant schools programmes are also part of the week. This is the 26th year of the Connemara Bog Week, and lots of special events are planned.

The main event, the Connemara Pony Show, consists of 20 in-hand classes showcasing all ages and varieties of Connemara Pony. A Dog Show and Sheep Show are also included in the day’s events. Roundstone Regatta

Roundstone Regatta is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, traditional sea festivals in the West of Ireland, dating back to the 1890s. It incorporates both traditional sailing vessels of the West Coast (Galway hookers, leath bháid and gleoiteógs), and currach racing (rowing) from the traditional timber Currachs to the canvas racing Currachs and Naomhoga. The Regatta caters for all ages and classes of boys and girls in the rowing classes, as well as men and women.

All Ireland Open Dog Show

Gaelforce West 2010

Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is in its fifth year year in 2010 with last year seeing 2500 competitors taking part. This year we are open to 3000 competitors. The race is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 65km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach to Westport. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. The event is designed for solo competitors, but you can run it with a buddy or training partner.
This years event takes place on the 21st of August 2010 and costs €85 per person.

Clifden Community Arts Week

Roundstone Registered Connemara Pony Fair

The Roundstone Registerd Connemara Pony Fair will take place on Saturday, 18th September, 2010, beginning at 08.00. Foals must be on halters. Entry fee: €20. We recommend that foals be blood typed and chipped prior to fair. (Foals will be scanned). A vet will be available on request. Representatives of the Connemara Pony Breeders' Society will be present to deal with paperwork.
